David, Brittany, and five kids in northern Michigan
We’re the Maggretts — David, Brittany, and our five kids — and this is our little corner of northern Michigan.
Marsh Mellow Farms started because we wanted to slow down, grow more of our own food, and share it with the people around us.
What began with a small garden and orchard is slowly becoming something bigger. We’ve welcomed a flock of chickens, started testing new varieties of vegetables, and are learning to bake bread and preserve what we grow. We’re teaching ourselves the things our grandparents seemed to know without thinking twice — and we hope to pass them on to our kids, and to anyone else who wants to learn.
Our kids are growing up right alongside it all — collecting eggs, digging in the dirt, watching things sprout, getting muddy, and occasionally bringing us something from the garden that we definitely did not ask them to pick.
We don’t have everything figured out. We’re learning as we go. Some things grow beautifully. Some things don’t. Some seasons give us more than we know what to do with, while others teach us a little humility.
And we wouldn’t trade that.
We believe good food is worth the hard work, patience, and long hours of cultivating it. There’s something comforting about knowing what went into the soil, what our animals were fed, and where the food on our table came from.
Food we can explain, because we grew it.
Each year, our little piece of land is becoming more like the farm we’ve always dreamed about.
Why “Marsh Mellow”?
Our farm sits among the woods, fields, and marshy places that make northern Michigan home.
There’s something about these quiet places that we love — birdsong on spring mornings, spring peepers in the evenings, sunlight shining through the trees and reflecting off the marshy water, the smell of morning dew and freshly turned soil, hot summer days, foggy fall mornings, snow on the trees and sleepy garden beds, and the feeling that you don’t have to rush quite so much.
“Mellow” is the feeling we hope to create here.
A little slower.
A little simpler.
A little more connected.
A place where you can pick up a dozen colorful eggs, bring home vegetables for dinner, find something homemade for the weekend, or simply stop by and say hello.
We’re building this farm one garden bed, one chicken, one loaf of bread, and one season at a time.
